Chiesa Biblica Battista was chartered in May 2008, and we are now focusing on developing the church through continued evangelism, organizing various ministries and training leadership. In addition, we are assisting a national man in his desire to plant a church in northern Italy, and a missionary family in the establishment of a church in Pisa.
Italy is a mountainous peninsula in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, including two large islands, Sardinia and Sicily. It covers an area of 116,000 sq. miles (about the size of Arizona). The population: 60 million; around 1/5 the population of the USA, but with a much higher population density. The cost of living in Italy is somewhat higher than the US. Gas is about $9 per gallon and sales tax is 22%. The people and their culture have changed little over the centuries. Italians are very expressive and romantic at heart. Food and soccer are two very important focal points of the culture. Italy was united as a single state in 1861 and has been a Democratic Republic since 1946, headed by a prime minister. There are many political parties. The European community is changing the nature of life in Italy. The Mafia is still strong and influential. Roman Catholicism ceased to be the state religion in 1984, but continues to permeate the traditions, mindsets, and the political/social structure by making up 76% of the population. Non-religious comprise 17%; other religions about 4%, Muslims 2%, and professing evangelicals comprise a mere 1% of the population. The overriding humanistic mentality sets man up as the ultimate reality, and corruption in society fosters a general lack of trust among the people.
