In September 2014, we were asked to take over the ministry of Landmark Independent Baptist Church of Auckland, which only had five people and had been without a pastor for seven years. The process began with Maranatha Baptist Church Auckland merging into the Landmark Independent Baptist Church of Auckland. The church name was changed in 2015 to Lighthouse Baptist Church of Auckland to express the purpose of ministry of both groups as one church. The merger was more difficult than expected with all the legal technicalities involved, and after four years of legal challenges and paperwork, the church was officially recognized with registered charity status by several government agencies in October 2017. The major emphasis for 2018 – 2020 is to train our people to evangelize the area of ministry where the Lord has placed us (primarily among the Pacific Island people in the area) and to prepare those who desire to be leaders in various areas of Christian service.
Auckland is indigenous to a large Polynesian population, which claims title to being the largest Polynesian city in the world. New Zealand's current population is over 4.7 million. Auckland, known as "The City of Sails" boasts itself as being "home" to over one-third of the country's population. The people attending our church are believers from several national backgrounds: European New Zealanders, NZ Maori, Samoan, Tongan, Filipino, South African, American, Malaysian, Chinese, Singaporean, Indians (from India & Fiji), Korean, Nepal, and occasionally folks from other countries visiting us. Auckland needs more independent Baptist churches in the region. The greatest need is more laborers for church planting and the training of national leaders for biblical leadership in the churches. Much prayer is needed to reach the people of New Zealand for Christ.
